Late post on this class because of so much going on in the last couple months!

This was my second time teaching Venetian-style at @focimcga and everyone did an amazing job! Those of us who blow glass and do Venetian-style can attest that it can be frustrating at times, but we worked through the tough stuff in order to learn and get better each and every class session.

I’m so proud of all these students for showing up and putting themselves out of their comfort zone to learn something new and difficult! Thank you to @myoung1795 for being an excellent TA throughout our six weeks together and thank you to @focimcga for continuing to have me teach the class.

It was so great being in Corning this past week for the Expanding Horizons program! @internet___angel was their instructor and along with four other mentors, we helped guide our six total students make work as they drew inspiration from the Museum and from each other. Every single one of them made huge improvements in their skills and it was awesome to see young people be so excited about glass.

Thank you to our amazing instructor Victoria for being so kind, patient, and helpful with all of the students. Thank you to the @corningmuseumstudio and @corningmuseum for hosting us so graciously, and thank you to the other mentors from @tulsaglassblowingschool , @hilltopartists , @waterstreetglassworks , and Yaya Arts Center for being such a great mentorship team to all these bright, intelligent, and passionate teenagers. Finally thank you to @focimcga for the opportunity and sending me along to experience this program with one of our own teens.

Back to basics with this one. I’ve been having a lot of fun making the dolphin stems, but some days it’s good to focus on the simple things. I’m a fan of this one and I’m planning on making this form more regularly.

This one and the dolphins will be available for sale at American Craft Fest coming up on Saturday and Sunday June 13-14! Doors open at 11am both days. Come say hi and check out some of my recent work!

I’m excited with how these shots turned out! These are all the dolphins I’ve made in the last couple of weeks and they look great together in their group photo as a single pod 🐬🐬🐬

If you’re wondering where you can see these in person, I’ll be showing a booth at American Craft Fest again the weekend of June 13-14 starting at 11am Saturday and Sunday at Union Depot in St. Paul.

I will be updating my online storefront in the coming days, so if you’re interested in purchasing one online, keep your eyes peeled for the drop announcement. Thanks for checking them out!

Keep trying and eventually it’ll work out! The first attempts might fail, but they also give me opportunities to learn and adjust in order to make the next iterations successful.

This is my first double dolphin stem in over ten years and I’m super excited about how it turned out, especially the color. Love how that gold ruby looks, but hate just how expensive it’s gotten recently.

Thanks @steveclaypatch for all the help with this one!

Moments before disaster struck… 😅 They don’t all make it in the box, even the ones that are at the very literal last step of the process. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve had a goblet snap at the wrong spot right as I tap the punty to break it off. I definitely made a rookie move letting it hit the table, but you live and you learn for the next one.

Stick around to the end to hear the dramatic scream of defeat 😭

Thank you for the help with this one @scott_tooky, we almost had it!

Last week I had the privilege of demonstrating for the Italian Cultural Center of Minneapolis/St. Paul, a local non-profit that promotes the knowledge, understanding, and appreciation of the Italian language and culture through education and various events in the Twin Cities area.

While I am not Italian, Venetian-style glassblowing is very close to my heart and many of my mentors had Venetian masters who taught them their ways and techniques. I try to honor the history and culture by paying homage to those techniques that have been passed down through the centuries.

I know some Venetian-style glassmakers consider themselves purists and work exclusively in the manner in which the original Venetian maestros do. I myself tend to follow a more hybridized, American-Venetian style using torches when available and switching up certain sequences when necessary. I’m not so uptight about it and I think it’s a valid approach, though some folks might disagree. And you know what? That’s okay. Blow glass how you want to and as long as you’re making what you want to, getting it in the box, and are having a good time doing it, the extra noise doesn’t matter and the purists can do their thing.

Huge thank you @steveclaypatch and @isaac_theobald_glass for helping me out during the demo and thanks to @lynn_bierbaum for taking these awesome photos for me. Thank you to @focimcga for hosting the event and allowing me to demonstrate, and thank you to @italianculturalcentermpls for coming to check out the studio. I hope you all learned something new and had a good time!

Refining fundamentals went really well these last six weeks! My students worked on blowing thinner pieces, trimming lips, making different shapes, practicing handles and bits, and working on various types of feet. Thank you to @davidvwirth for being an excellent TA during the past weeks and thank you to @focimcga for continuing to have me teach!

First new dolphin stem in a while! It was really nice to finally get some time in the studio with @steveclaypatch to make some new work in preparation for American Craft Fest 2026. I will post more details as we get closer to the date, but I’m happy I’ll be showing work again at Union Depot on June 13th-14th!

Thanks @steveclaypatch for being a great assistant and friend helping me prepare for the show! Thank you @hannah.m.whitemcginn for bringing the glue bit!

Another Intro to Glass class in the books! Everyone did a great job and pushed through numerous challenges to learn so much. Thank you @reidlutter for being an excellent TA and helping me guide everyone through these last six weeks together! Thank you @focimcga for having me as an instructor week after week.

Thinking about getting these @bcmetalworking jacks to make some huge goblets… just kidding! I did have a great visit with Bryan at his home studio and it was awesome chatting about the intricacies of toolmaking and how it relates to the objects we make as glassblowers. I picked up a pair of his tweezers and can’t wait to try them out soon!

Thank you Bryan for being such a hospitable host and showing me some of your process! Glass people who aren’t familiar with @bcmetalworking tools need to check him out. Bryan’s tools have a great feel to them and it’s really cool that he’s only 45 minutes away from the Twin Cities.

We finished up another excellent 6-week Intro to Glass class this past week! I had a great time teaching everyone and it was a such a pleasure to see everyone working so hard to improve on their skills. Thank you to @rwlehrke for being such a great TA as usual! You have a great way of helping me explain things to students and I value your help immensely.

Thank you to @focimcga for allowing me to teach such awesome people!

Another class in the books! I helped design this course called Refining Fundamentals as a way to encourage students to practice some essential skills and it was awesome to see everyone grow their abilities. It was mostly a skills drill class, so there was lots of repetition under supervision to reinforce good habits and techniques. Even though there was a wide range of skill, everyone walked away a better glassblower. Thanks to @focimcga for making this class happen and to @myoung1795 and @rwlehrke for being awesome TAs.

I had such a great time teaching this Intro to Glass group! Every group is different, but the thing that remains the same is witnessing how everyone grows their love for the material and the process of glassblowing. Special thanks to @rwlehrke for being such a great TA and thanks to @focimcga for being a great place to learn the medium.

Check our schedule to see if there are any openings if you want to try it out for yourself!!

Another one of the cups from Corning, 2015, when I was fixated on practicing with the pineapple mold. I just love the optics and the feel of the little indentations.

I’ve been less active with my personal work as I focus more on teaching for right now. I did, however, receive a box of old work circa 2015 from some friends who run @hotshopglass in Racine, WI and there were some goodies in there! I love this one so much! It’s definitely the fanciest ice cream dish I’ve ever made.
